Did you ever wonder how the labs that Microsoft uses to create new devices like Surface look like and what kind of machinery they use? A new video from Bloomberg have the insights as Microsoft has granted them access to the secret Surface labs, where the company has spent countless hours creating the productivity tool that can replace your laptop – Surface Pro 3.

The Microsoft’s Model Shop is where all the modeling happens, this facility employs state of the art tools to create new prototypes such as Magnesium sliding machine, 3D printers, and old school machinery like table saw, power drill, and all sort of material to model with.

Perhaps the highlight of the video is the Surface Pro 3 kickstand hinge prototype, which is four times bigger than the actual size in the device. Microsoft created this model to have a sense of how the hinge would look like, how it would feel like, and how it would sound. So when the company makes the actual kickstand in a much smaller size they would know what to expect.
