This article describes three formats that use the ALP file extension, including how to open and convert each kind.
What to Know
- An ALP file could be an AnyLogic project or an Ableton Live audio package.Open one with AnyLogic or Ableton Live, respectively.Conversions are supported in those same programs.
What Is an ALP File?
A file with the ALP file extension is an AnyLogic project file used with AnyLogic simulation software. These files use XML to save everything that pertains to the project, including models, the design canvas, resource references, etc.
Ableton Live pack files also utilize this file extension, in Ableton’s Live software, for storing audio data. You might see those with other Ableton files, like those in the Ableton Live set (.ALS) format.
Another format that utilizes this extension is Alphacam laser post. These files are used for storing woodworking components in the Alphacam CAD/CAM software.
How to Open an ALP File
The AnyLogic software, including the free AnyLogic PLE (Personal Edition) version, opens project files. The software works on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
ALP is also used as an abbreviation for technology-related terms that have nothing to do with these file formats, like account login password, account lockout policy, adaptive link-state protocol, and assembly language program.
Like other XML-based files, these can also be viewed in a text editor like Notepad++. Opening an ALP file in a text-only application gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how the file works, but it’s really of no use for most people. AnyLogic should be used to open the file in pretty much all cases.
If you have an Ableton Live pack file, open it with Live (there’s a 30-day free trial) through the File > Install Pack menu option. In Windows, the file is unpacked and installed to the user’s Documents folder under \Ableton\Factory Packs, by default. You can check/change your folder in Options > Preferences > Library > Installation Folder for Packs.
Alphacam software opens Alphacam laser post files.
Free Ableton Live pack files can be downloaded from the Ableton website.
Notepad++ or another text editor can also be used if you’re not sure what should open the ALP file. Software not listed above may use the extension as well, in which case opening it in a text editor may help you find some info inside that indicates what software the file belongs to.
How to Convert an ALP File
Some versions of AnyLogic can export a project to a Java application. On their website is a comparison of the different AnyLogic versions to see which ones support it.
If you find that an application on your PC tries to open the file but it’s the wrong application or you’d rather have another installed program open it, see our How to Change File Associations in Windows guide for help making that change.
The only free way we know of to convert an Ableton audio file used with the Live software is to open it in the demo version of Live. Once the audio is fully loaded in the program, go to File > Export Audio/Video and select either WAV or AIF. If you want to save to MP3 or a different format, use one of these free audio converters on the WAV or AIF file.
ALP files used with the Alphacam software may be able to be converted into a different file format by using the Alphacam software. Usually, if this is supported, the application will have the option available in its File > Save as menu or some sort of Export option.
Still Can’t Open It?
If your file doesn’t open even after trying all the suggestions described above, check the file extension one more time. You might have a totally unrelated file that just looks related to ALP files because the file extension is similar.
APL files, for instance, could be track information used by the audio compressor Monkey’s Audio. Or, maybe your file really uses the AIP file extension reserved for programs like Adobe Illustrator, Advanced Installer, and Actual Installer.
