AMD has officially announced its new Radeon RX 6600 XT graphics card, which is scheduled to release in mid-August, with a price starting of $379.
The Radeon RX 6600 XT looks to be targeting PC gamers with older hardware and provides a decent upgrade for 1080p users, but has nowhere near enough power for a 4K rig. It might sound counter-intuitive, but as The Verge points out, it was mostly 1080p gaming displays that sold last year.
A card like the RX 6600 XT would be a great fit for those displays, as it would be able to run popular AAA games at 1080p with maximum settings.
Specs-wise, the RX 6600 XT offers 8GB of GDDR6 RAM with a memory speed of 16 Gbps and bandwidth up to 256 GB/s. It features 32 compute units with a boost frequency of up to 2589 MHz and a game frequency of up to 2359 MHz. So it’s definitely not as powerful as other cards in AMD’s 6000 series, but its MSRP is also about $100 lower than the next closest model, the RX 6700 XT.
While the RX 6600 XT will likely appeal to a relatively broad market of PC users, there’s still the problem of the ongoing GPU shortage. There’s no sure way to know if its release will be plagued by scalpers and bots buying up all the stock in order to sell it at a markup, but this has been a pattern with GPUs lately.
If you plan to try to get your hands on an AMD RTX 6600 XT, it should be available for purchase on August 11 at AMD partner retailers like ASUS, MSI, XFX, and Yeston.
